Harvey Hottel, Inc. just completed an environmentally friendly Geothermal Heating and Cooling system on the brand new Winchester Safety Rest Area & Welcome Center off Route 81 in Winchester, Virginia.
The scope of the project included the installation of seven geothermal heat pumps and the drilling of sixteen geothermal wells that were placed directly under the building's foundation.
When faced with this project, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) management wanted to make sure that this new facility was constructed using "green building practices" and was LEED Certified. They brought in Harvey Hottel to conduct a feasibility study and soon after hired them to design and install the geothermal system used for this project.
Harvey Hottel, Inc. is a specialist in the field of Geothermal Heating and Cooling and LEED Building and Architecture.
This new safety rest area/welcome center is one of three facilities that will be completely reconstructed as part of a $20 million effort to update 14 safety rest areas and welcome centers. The $6 million project to reconstruct the Winchester Welcome Center began in May 2006 and opened in the spring of 2008.
The new building has approximately 15,000 square feet, additional restrooms and grounds, and parking improvements that will better serve travelers.
